Packaged Polymer Clay
Polymer clay, despite the name, does not contain any clay. It is named for its similar moulding property to genuine clay. It is a mixture of PVC resin and a plasticiser. Like clay it is worked to soften it, then shaped and is baked in an oven at a fairly low temperature to harden. A foil armature can be used to bulk out a piece so that less clay is used. Many colours and varieties are available, and I hope to practice and grow my skills as I've mainly only made snakes so far.
Packaged Air Dry Clay
Air Drying Clay does contain natural clay and added fibres to allow hardening without any heating. It is much firmer and messier than polymer clay but makes a handy material for easy crafting and is great for beginners. Pieces are sculpted, then left to air-dry and harden. The clay can then be painted or even used to create a latex mould for concrete casting.Â
