I have a Creality Falcon2 22W Laser Engraver with air assist pump and unit cover. It has an open, rigid frame with a laser mounted on a movable bar. The laser can engrave and cut through a number of materials and has a number of accessories. The cover has an extraction fan and pipe that directs smoke and fumes outside. Special, green-tinted glasses are worn, and the unit must always be supervised.
For designing I mainly use the free online version of Canva which features graphics and designing tools. These images are then saved, with quick touch ups made in Microsoft Paint if needed. The image is then loaded into LaserGRBL, sized, and converted to instructions for the engraver.
I currently use LaserGRBL which is a free, open-source program to encode the files for laser engraving. An image is converted into numerous lines of code (thousands to hundreds of thousands depending on size and complexity) with instructions for positioning, power and speed. Small pieces may take a few minutes to with larger items taking about an hour or more.
Materials
I have currently only used timber varieties in engraving so far: basswood, MDF, bamboo and pine. I plan to try more materials when time permits, and I have had some more practice!Â
The unit can engrave and cut certain materials such as: metals, glass, acrylic plastic, fabrics, rubber, stone, leather and paper.
Product Examples:
